Our Story

Built in 1925.
This classic house was built in 1925, and has been a community institution serving as a bohemian Coffee House since it was converted to a restaurant in 1998 by the Muddy Water’s Coffee Company.
The Story
In the past 20 years we have preserve the heritage of the community gathering space by “hot rodding” all of the original fixtures including the tables, bar tops, original doors and original 1925 Douglas fir hardwood floor.
We take pride in continuing the tradition of providing a safe and healthy community gathering space for people to exchange ideas and recharge. We have hosted many artists, community leaders and grassroots organizations during their planning and networking phases and hope to be able to do the same for you.
The History
It all started with the visionaries at the Muddy Waters Company Company, who, in 1998 procured the home and renovated it heavily into the commercial space you see today. The roaster was placed where the modern day stage is, and floor-plan remains very much the same, including the original maple table tops and bars.
The company had changed hands a couple times before the birth of Northtown Coffee, hosting businesses such as Muddy’s Hot Cup and Couple Cups. Our stewardship of this beautiful Arcata institution started in 2013 and we have continued to add fixtures such as our Full-Prep kitchen, Permanent Poet Stage and 5000w Solar array on the South Side of our building.
We take pride in continuing to bring you a unique and wholesome Coffee House Experience for years to come!
